Born in Barcelona on November 1, 1923, her career as an internationally famous soprano led her to be the first Spaniard to make her debut at the Bayreuth Festival, to become a favorite artist of the New York Met seasons and one of the few singers of who can be said to have sang works as far apart in time as the Cantigas of Alfonso X the Wise and the Cinco canciones negras of Montsalvatge.
Victoria de los Ángeles had solid musical beginnings thanks to her training at the Liceo Conservatory, but also thanks to an innate musical talent and instinct that allowed her to win the Radio Barcelona Competition in 1940 and first prize at the Geneva International Competition in 1947. But one of the crucial formative and artistic events in his artistic journey was the friendship with José María Lamaña, founder of Ars Musicae, a pioneering instrumental ensemble in Catalonia in the recovery of instruments and the original form of interpretation of early music, with which Victoria de los Ángeles debuted at the Palau de la Música Catalana on May 19, 1944. The Palau de la Música Catalana honors the great Catalan soprano on the centenary of her birth, emphasizing her interpretive legacy in several concerts that will span in this season and the next.
