: Messa da Requiem
Details
Giuseppe Verdi composed his 'Messa da Requiem' in 1873 at the peak of his career. It is well known that he was a man with nationalist convictions. His 'Requiem' has always been seen from the perspective of a lament for the death of his friend, the Italian Poet Alessandro Manzoni.
The premiere had an impact not only because of the strength of its message, but also because of its groundbreaking character, since Verdi was generally associated with opera. The freedom of form permitted by the Church allowed Verdi to omit the Gloria, thus lessening the importance of the idea of resurrection so closely linked to Christianity.
Together with this Requiem, we present the work of Catalan Composer Valls Xufré, great admirer of the Europeanist Movement, who composed a true ode to the transformation of a Europe in ruins after the Second World War, until reaching the consolidation of the European Union.
Constant transformation of humanity, Death and Resurrection are the common themes of this program.
